The Surgical Palliative Care Podcast
As one of just 80 U.S. surgeons currently board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Red created The Surgical Palliative Care Podcast to showcase the founders and the leaders of the surgical palliative care movement. Tune in to hear more about the rich history of the profession, to stay up to date on the latest research and to learn how to integrate palliative care into your practice. Hosted by Dr. Red and a variety of co-hosts, The Surgical Palliative Care Podcast aims to educate, foster community and provide mentorship to all those interested in making certain that all surgical and trauma patients receive the excellent treatment they deserve.

Episode 5: Dr. Diane Meier: Founder of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC)
Join host Dr. Red Hoffman as she interviews Dr. Diane Meier, a professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, as well as well as a professor of Medical Ethics, at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City (listen for NYC ambulances in the background!) Diane is the founder of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) as well as a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (also known as a "genius grant.") She shares about the early days of CAPC and describes some of the educational offerings available through a CAPC membership (go online and type in your email to see if your organization is a member!). Diane also discusses the importance of tailoring your message for your audience and reminds us to be thoughtful about our language, particularly when we are attempting to define palliative care. I learned so much about communication from speaking with her! Enjoy!
